About the VPN prompt

Proxy-based apps often use Android’s VPN service. If you see “Connection request: this app wants to set up a VPN connection,” it can route your device’s traffic through it. Allow it only if you accept that the app can see and relay that traffic, and don’t use it while logged into banking or sensitive accounts.

How to check permissions on Android

  1. Settings → Apps → Astute Beta Server → Permissions.
  2. Review the allowed and denied lists.
  3. Deny anything you don’t need and test whether the app still works.
  4. Check Settings → Accessibility and Device admin apps to make sure the app isn’t listed.

Red flags

  • A request for SMS, contacts, call logs, accessibility, or device admin
  • Permissions that appear after a later update
  • Pop-ups asking for permissions from outside the app

If you see any of these, uninstall the app. See How to uninstall.

Frequently asked questions

Only if you use voice chat. You can deny it.

It’s how proxy apps work, but it does let the app route your traffic. Use it only if you accept that.

The app may fail to load. Try it, and allow it only if needed.
